Well I am tired but it is time to start my day

I guess I don't have anything to say, besides that.

Post Storm Sunset

We had some severe storms come through our area this week, and had tornado sirens going off both in the morning and evening. Luckily the first set of storms had a mild tornado farther south of us. The second set had a potential formation going over us but luckily nothing actually came together and we only got a bit of hail.

3w4dw: low on spoons & not the cheeriest

I've got an upset tummy and have had to cancel tomorrow's plans, which involved having Nikki over to hang out (our last chance to have the house to ourselves before my grandparents return this weekend).

Also, I found out today that my K-pop darlings, CIX, are disbanding. I have deliberately paced myself so that I still have lots of their old videos and past media to savour, but I'll eventually have watched everything... and, well. I knew their contracts were up but this is the first time I'm experiencing this. I've been a k-pop fan for a decade and seen disbandments, but this is the first time it's happening with my faves. My other faves are ATEEZ who have all renewed after their first contract's duration was up, and KaiBaek from EXO who aren't in the same group anymore but are both active and so successful that they'll likely continue to be.

My day could've gone better, ha. The silver lining is that I'm getting to rest.

Tiller time again!

It’s been wonderful weather for outdoor work: more mulching has been done and brush has been cut and removed. I also gave the rototiller a quick pre-season going over: motor and gear oil topped off and a flat tire taken care of.*

I’ve had a furry friend keeping me company out by the shed since February; a rabbit has taken up residence nearby :o)

Waiting patiently to see what might be available.

Soooon…

Edit - I just noticed that this bunny is probably a New England Cottontail: there is a dark patch on the forehead and not the white spot of the Eastern Cottontail! Click the pics to expand them.

* I probably mentioned this before in regards to the tiller… When I was about 16 I watched, in awe, mind you, a friend of my sister manually replace a tire on his 1970 Road Runner. He took the original tire off the rim, and replaced it with another, with tire irons. To seat the bead he looped and tied a rope around the center of the tire, tightening it by turning a lug wrench slipped beneath it while filling the tire with air. Heh, I use the rope trick on the tiller tires, when necessary, with baling twine, a crescent wrench, and a hand pump.

Some General April Updates

I'm going to try to sum up some updates I currently remember so they exist somewhere.

Quick Updates
  • I'll be getting my own hearing aids on May 19, which is also my partner's birthday, so double celebration.
  • Things with my new therapist have been... mixed. I might make a longer restricted post going into more detail.
  • I've been playing a lot of Overwatch and Enshrouded lately. Enshrouded has been surprisingly hard to put down.
  • I've been further discovering things about myself that I might go further into in a restricted access post.
  • I've been trying to find ways to be more productive despite my limitations. I've been checking out this person's YouTube channel and Notion templates, which I've been finding helpful in shifting my viewpoint of my disability-related limitations. Maybe I'll make a longer post on that, too.
  • Oh, and I've been thinking about attending the local university again. Recently before I quit, I was struggling with taking one class at a time but had almost finished my degree. Maybe now I'll be able to finish it. Who knows. Or maybe it's been so long that I have to retake some classes. I'm pretty sure that's the case for at least one class. *Sigh.* Oh well.

3w4dw: Kawaii Icons!

I like to browse kawaii stationery scans on occasion. I also have icons cropped from them that I found on [community profile] bubblycloudsicons and Creamiicandy on LJ, and I like to request more.

Recently for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, reeby10 has been hosting an icons request fest on their journal. I requested icons, providing a link to a collection of old stationery scans. I received adorable icons 💝

Here are some of my faves!

Also, one of my Dreamwidth friends had an icon request on their journal, prior to this. I requested icons there too, from a different set of scans! I'll share them here, too, when I see them 💝 Any of these icons I requested can be used by anyone else with credit to the makers \o/

3w4dw: kofk avatar 'tea lime'

I realise I'm late to begin participating in [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth but I might as well start now. I thought about what I could post about every day (on days that I'm not posting anything else on my journal) and decided on discussing my avatars on Kingdom of Knuffel. Kingdom of Knuffel is a dressup game, virtual pet/adoptables site and forum community rolled into one. You earn points by chatting and raising virtual pets, and spend the points on dressup items for your customisable avatar.

This avatar is my great success. It's titled 'Tea Lime' and it won first place!!! in the May 2022 Monthly Avatar Contest at Kingdom of Knuffel.

Things I'm proud of:
Matching the Stripes and Hearts background with the Heart Cup.
The necklace looks like it's a part of the dress because the pendant sits right at the center of the bow. Speaking of bows, the dress has a bow, as does the hair, as does the avatar's frame. Even the necklace has a tiny bow.
The way I got the green skin with the white face was by using an item called Clown Facepaint on the Peridot Skin. (Otherwise she'd be green from face to torso.) I thought the violet blush looked nice even though there's no violet in the rest of the avatar, so that her face wouldn't be stark, uniform pale.
I chose the Alseid Lips, which I think makes it look like she just blew on her drink or took a sip. It's just the right, trace amount of tiny pucker.

review: Cold Tapes

Cold Tapes is an award-winning and Critically Acclaimed Murder Mystery Audio Drama inspired by True Crime podcasts.

Set against the backdrop of Antarctica’s six-month Winter Over, marked by perpetual darkness and isolation, our story delves into the intertwined lives and claustrophobic relationships of a small group of international scientists and crew stationed on a remote research base, Bowers Wilson.

In addition to the extreme conditions, the research station crackles with sexual tension, unexplained mysterious psychotic events, hidden criminal pasts and strange global conspiracy theories, thrusting any wannabe detectives into a gripping narrative surrounding the mysterious death of 33-year-old behavioural scientist Andrew Fairfield.

With only sixteen people left on the base, the murderer must be one of them. Join the diligent and obsessive DCI Tessa McCallister as she works around the clock to spearhead the police investigation from the UK and solve the murder from over 9,000 miles away.

I heard the ad for this audiodrama in another Rusty Quill production and was intrigued--and I devoured it all in just over a day. This was well done and well acted and super interesting--like, how many times have you listened to a crime investigation conducted remotely? The ending is...hm... I enjoyed how it left me like "Wait, but what about-- what's next? TELL ME!" There seems to be a S2 coming up but I have no clue when.

BTW, the blurb (and link) above is from the Rusty Quill page, and I highly recommend you stay the away from the show's own website because it has spoilers!

journaling: it's been storming a lot recently...

But at least the lilacs and violets are happy!

There was also a double rainbow a while ago. :3

I've also been preparing to start a garden for the first time, pretty excited about it! I've got some fence container-things set up in my backyard, filled with fresh potting soil and some seeds ready. I've been talking to a coworker about it; apparently, tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans are good starter plants that basically grow themselves. I also have a pack of red strawberry popcorn that I bought on a whim a year or so ago that I'm hoping will still be viable.

journaling: i modded my 3ds!

I've been meaning to mod it for *such* a long time, but honestly, when it was still supported I was a little scared of getting my account banned... and then I straight up forgot about it, honestly. But then I started playing various Pokemon ROM hacks and other gbc/gba games on my phone to replace mobile gaming / scrolling, and I started really craving a proper controller and one thing led to another... I used this guide and everything went completely smoothly! Unrelated, though, the rubber on my joystick completely fell to pieces after just being sticky for a while. It's so annoying how badly rubber ages, ugh. Looks like that'll have to be a project for another day...

Besides that, did a little bit of decorating!
I got a couple stickers from a friend a while ago including this Shinx that I thought fit well with this cute Luxray theme I found. Then I crocheted a little four-pointed star dangly charm-thing to look like her tail. :3

Some random ROM hack recs / etc:
  • Pokemon Lazarus: really beautiful, gen II-style graphics and putting a spotlight on gen II mons. clothing options. following Pokemon. Stardew Valley-style fishing. quests (including wanting you to catch all the Pokemon on each individual route. I've been sinking a lot of time into doing those, lol). really enjoying it! I'm also a big fan of their other hack, Emerald Seaglass, which is Emerald redone in the same style
  • Pokemon Sour Crystal: Crystal with a few quality of life updates (most importantly, the box system is more like gen III and you can catch mareep <3)
  • Karpe Diem: a short and sweet fishing-themed Pokemon fangame. very chill and cozy!
  • Taiyaki's Fabulous Museum of Fish: a nonogram-based rpg for gbc. love this, great vibes
I dunno, I've just really fallen in love with the Gameboy Color recently; there's something that's just so charming about these graphics. I downloaded various others, but decision paralysis tends to kick my ass, so I've been defaulting to these (to start with, at least). I might also get FE: Gay Awakening (lol) and finally marry Cherche as fem!Robin <3

[Also, I got sooo badly sunburned from yesterday, yowch!! ( ꩜﹏꩜; ) ]

journaling: art talk & coloring by the river

Howdy! Happy Three Weeks For Dreamwidth! I've been meaning to participate in this the last couple of years, but kept forgetting, oops. I do have a bit of a stockpile of ideas for future posts, though -- mostly journaling, questionnaires, and / or casual crafty-stuff. So, let's jump into it....

Earlier today, I met up with a friend who I haven't seen in a long time! We went to a cafe with outdoor sitting right by the river and just sat there for like six hours catching up, coloring, and talking about art supplies. She brought a full backpack of various things that she let me try out, including some Derwent Inktense pencils I've been eyeing for a while! I think I will end up getting them, after all; they were really nice to use and I've just really been wanting to get a set of watercolor pencils for a while now. I also just really appreciated being able to nerd out over art with someone IRL; no one else I know really understands: "Paper is paper and a crayon is a crayon. What's the difference?" Oh! and I ended up talking to her about Dreamwidth, also; she apparently was really big into LiveJournal back in the day, but had never heard of DW, so maybe now she'll check it out! Overall, just a very relaxing, fun day! ^^

Speaking of art, the piece I was coloring was very meditative to make but not necessarily the most interesting to show, I don't think... I did finish a little painting yesterday, though, that I wanted to share!

I constantly think about the "Sailor Moon color palette" and the way background elements kinda melt into the fog and I've done several paintings "in this style," but I've never actually done a proper study of it. This painting is based off a random screenshot I found online. I would also really like to keep practicing how to achieve that dreamy / foggy look and how to simplify colors and shadows and whatnot, so I might do a couple more of these soon!

This isn't necessarily a straight forward study, though. I bought some neon acrylic inks recently, so I wanted to take them out for a spin... I think I definitely should water them down in the future rather than using them straight out of the bottle; it's a bit much, rip. I am still kinda fond of the neon purple tree, though, but yeah, more practice & experimenting needed! Also, I bought some masking fluid a long time ago and only just now tried it out here... very messily, but it does work nicely!

Letssee, what else?... I also signed up for a couple of events here on Dreamwidth / Ao3 a while ago: but both of those have quite a while to go before they're revealed (May 29th & June 20th, respectively). I already submitted my story for the first one but can't talk about it, obviously. ^^

I think I'll stop there for now; see you tomorrow (hopefully)!! ^^

Today's birds

Today I made two short trips to a local stream and saw quite a few different kind of birds, partly with the help of binoculars:

  • Great blue heron wading in the stream
  • Hawk (red-tailed?)
  • Green-winged teals
  • Black-capped chickadees
  • American robins
  • A reddish finch (house finch?)
  • A hummingbird too far away to identify and too quick for me to binocular
  • A little yellow-and-black bird, probably a goldfinch but it was gone before I got a good look at it.
  • A tiny bird that I suspect was a golden-crowned kinglet because I think I saw a splash of yellow on its crown but again I didn't get a good look before it was gone.
  • Some brown sparrow-y birds that I couldn't identify
  • Plus the city birds I see all the time without going anywhere: pigeons, crows, starlings, gulls (glaucous-winged?)

I also saw some red admiral butterflies and I think I caught a glimpse of a scampering mouse-sized mammal but it got into cover too quickly for me to really see (probably just a mouse).

Oh Venus

Looked out at the sky the other night and the moon was not that bright. Despite what appears in the photo below, we could see the entire ball of the Moon. It was just that the slice was brighter.

What was also very noticeable was Venus. After a number of attempts I was finally able to get a non wavery shot of it in close-up.
